The Women of the Waves

Megan Spurrell, Senior Editor of Conde Naste Traveler, came to Whatcom County in May 2022 to learn more about the women, and indigenous issues, in our fisheries. Tele Aadsen, aboard her troller F/V Nerka, lovingly shared with Megan how the harvest method of trolling for salmon works. Tele and her partner, Joel Brady-Power, troll for salmon in SE Alaska each summer, flash freezing each fish they bring aboard.

Megan also featured Elie Kinley, aboard her purse-seiner F/V Salish Sea, and a few others. Follow the link below to read about their joys and challenges in commercial fishing:

Whatcom Waterfront Blue Drinks returns this fall, with the first date set for Wed.,  October 19th at the new Ponderosa Beer and Books, 1225 Roeder Ave, Bellingham.

The gathering starts at 5:30 p.m. and wraps up at 7:30 p.m., though the venue stays open, so guests are welcome to stay and mingle.

Blue Drinks is a free networking event (food and drink is available for purchase) for anyone involved or interested in our maritime/waterfront sector -- where you can share news, discuss ideas, talk about concerns, and most importantly, catch up with one another.

There will be a light structure to the evening. Interested folks are welcome to share about your business, or the waterfront -- no more than 3 min. per speaker.

Hosted by the Whatcom Working Waterfront Coalition, and Ponderosa Beer and Books, we look forward to seeing you October 19th - 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Registration is encouraged, though not required.  Follow the link below to RSVP.  You can also simply show up!

You do not need to be a Coalition member, and attendance is open to everyone.

Coalition Launches Job Board

Are you looking for a job on our Waterfront?  Do you want to post a local job from your waterfront business, but don't want to pay for a lot of big-tech websites?  The Coalition now has a page on our website to help you!

Responding to our members' concerns about the difficulty finding crew, and crew having difficulty locating jobs, we've endeavored to launch a simple Job Board where members and non-members alike can post, and browse current job openings relating to Whatcom's waterfronts.

The board is updated regularly by our office, and there is a form linked on the page for anyone who wishes to submit a job to post.  Instructions are in the form for what information is needed.

This board is available to all waterfront businesses and Coalition members, but especially hosted for our local fishing fleet, who can send in details of the jobs they wish to post, without needing to subscribe to big, clunky websites that charge you a fee for each resume you receive.  Simply send us the details of your position listing, and we'll put it up on the board.  It's a digital cork board on the street corner!

In the inaugural phase, the postings will be free.  As the page goes through a trial phase, and gets refined, Coalition members will continue to be able to post for free as a benefit of membership, and a nominal charge will be asked to list a position for non-member companies.

To submit jobs, and browse open positions, book mark this page:
